Why call something a "dorky comment" just because it does'nt apply to you. A large number of photographers do not print a great number of 30in prints and a smart person does'nt buy a 150mph car to drive to work. The camera is a tool. A good photographer has and uses more than one camera depending on the job. Nikon provides a number of tools and the 800 fits well into certain areas. It's helping move us into the future and video is future of imaging.

The Nikon D800 sounds amazing to me. One huge advantage is the cropping capability. Most people want small crops of their digital images (I've printed thousands). This camera will give the shooter much more flexibility to bring out the small images within their bigger images. Also, when the detail is desperately needed as in photographing art or reproducing ultra detailed subjects, the Nikon should shine like a champion. Congratulations Nikon, I'm so proud of you guys.

I have been photographing weddings professionally for 28 years, and in my area - Monterey and San Francisco Bay Areas - I have only encountered ONE venue that requires vendors to pay to be on their "preferred" list, and that requirement was to advertise in their publication. I never did take them up on that offer, but I have plenty of other vendors, including wedding venues, florists, DJ's and cake makers, who do recommend my studio to brides. Maybe they just do things differently out there in New York.

This article really provides nothing of value to the reader, and it's sad to see this nonsense being offered, complete with sensational headline, as something we should actually take a moment to read. Photoclique, you have just proved that you are not really worth my time. Perhaps a it's time to unsubscribe from you.

This, will be a fine camera--but to work on files the size it will create you will need a computer that costs a bit more than the camera--add to that, how on earth do you plan to store the huge accumulation of files it will produce--maybe a hard drive a month? And finally what most people don't take into account is that photographic paper can absorb about 250 lines per inch--it doesn't matter what you throw at it, it will catch about 250. So for large prints it does make some sense, but you will rarely be taking advantage of that. Straight out of the chip you are talking 30" print--very very, few pictures get printed to that size. I suppose you could say that if you make, say an 8x10 and use one sixth of the information on the chip that somehow that extra information will influence the part that does get printed--what it will do is clog up the computer driving the printer--and you will probably be asked to downsize your image--I think Genuine Fractals works both ways.

I do agree with some of the things mentioned in the article, are they the biggest lies? Yes and no. Numbers 3 and 4 are not lies, one is a sales tactic that most experienced photographers know doesn't really work. Rather it makes one look desperate, and even when you say it...people rarely believe it. The other is a misconception about the industry as a whole. I believe that the real lie here is when a novice photographer says that they can do what an experienced photographer can do for a lot less money. Sure, anyone can push a button but is does take skill, practice, and knowledge to do what I can do with some measure of accuracy and art. Just because I can hold a paintbrush does not mean I can paint, or just because I can hold and play with a basketball does not mean I can play the game, especially like Michael Jordan.

Overall, I get what you were trying to do with the article. It got my attention. Yet, what you did here was far more harmful than helpful. Inadvertently, you are fueling the thought that photographers as a whole "LIE" to Brides to get them to sign a contracts. Rarely do I post to things like this, but I had to respond because you are undermining your own industry!. We are selling ART not used cars. It really bothers me that a "photography based" website would publish something that gives the slightest impression that photographers are sleezy salesman. Sure, we have some bad eggs out there but this is very disrespectful and misleading.

Seriously?!? This is a "press release?" I'm having a large chuckle here over the awareness that most so-called press releases are written, word-for-word, by the subject of the release, not by the journal in which it appears. Journalists, in general, are lazy and will simply print whatever is sent to them, often without even bothering to fact-check the content. If you know how to write them, PRs are a terrific way to get free advertising, but this is such a transparent ploy that it's kind of amusing. In fact, I'm astonished that "wedding CT photographer Steven Planck" didn't hotlink to his website every time the phrase appears. Alas, what this is not, is informative or useful.

Really? This is an industry press release? What a joke. I am a wedding photographer in one of the most competitive areas in the nation. I have been making a living shooting weddings since Canon T90. I don't get this self-published release, do you really think this is going to make a difference? Nothing but a bunch of complaining shooters out there. Get out! Find something else to do or buck up and get do something worthwhile. Life is too short.

Back in the last century . . "in the olden days", the wedding photographer's camera of choice was the Rolleiflex. Along came the Yashicamat for 1/4 the price and everyone then became a wedding photographer. It takes a few years before the word is out that it isn't the camera that captures the emotion and excitement of the bride's special day . . but the person that is behind the lens. Have patience all you frustrated photographers . . . our time will return if we don't try to emulate the rank amateurs by matching their uneducated pricing.

The only thing I agree with in this article is . . .

"It’s sad, but I think a lot are chasing the wedding industry gravy train, because industry giants like Canon and Nikon have given them “P” permission,”

Jealously is an UGLY thing "photoman from parts unkown" I think you would have not turned down the chance to do an article like this yourself. I know I would have, if only to get my name out there in the cyber world. At least we can find said CT wedding photographer Steven Planck. As you, photoman from parts unknown, do agree with some of the points made, by CT wedding photographer Steven Planck. Steven is being truthfull. I have been contacted by the local newspaper, and jumped at the chance to get my name in the paper for free. Like I once heard, any publicity is good publicity. BTW I have had a studio since, 1984

Let me double the sentiments expressed by most of the people above. I took the time to read this article and didn't find one item that related to any of the wedding clients I've worked with in the last 35 years. Do the editors at photoclique.com actually read these postings?

#1 is completely false. Our company in out of California and have been is the business over ten years. We are honored to be a preferred vendor on most of the areas major venues and have never paid a cent to be on any vendor list. We work hard, are dependable and make sure our brides and venues are happy. To state every venue requires a charge is insulting, damaging and untrue.

Seriously? Never seen a venue that doesn't charge to be on a preferred list? I've been in the business nearly 22 years and done over 600 weddings and I've NEVER paid to be on a vendor's preferred list. I've just done a good job, been nice and respectful to other vendors and let my work speak for itself. I'm based in Montana, but we do weddings all over and I've even been on California vendors' preferred lists. This article is mindless drivel. Biggest lies told to brides? The biggest lies are about experience, delivery times and what they do for their day jobs.

I live in a very small community where the other vendors are pretty small as well. I've only had 2 vendors tell me I had to pay for a referral and I didn't work with either one of them. With all the other vendors I work with, it's just mutual referrals that we hope for.

You forgot about how vendors are bridal fairs are the bottom of the barrel because the others book up by word of mouth quickly. And how just because someone has photographed a wedding that Justin Timberlake was at doesn't make them a good photographer. Also how photographers prices don't always reflect their worth as artists some come in as newbies with questionable quality with a big price tag to make them seem better. They are the ones putting a big buzz on these message boards most of the time. I disagree about only looking at reviews with photos. These are photographers if they where trying to fool someone they could just as easily post a photo.

Do you also tell the brides that you get someone to publish a rambling bit of drivel that is actually loaded with tons of hidden seo (says wedding CT photographer Steven Planck) for you? I like some of the points you make, but really? This article is nothing more than something for you to use to make yourself (says wedding CT photographer Steven Planck) appear to actually be a more trustworthy "wedding CT photographer Steven Planck" than others. hahahahah what would http://twitter.com/photogzilla think of this?

The proof is in the results not the technology. At the Photo Plus show in New York I tested the 24 MP Sony Nex-7 with an viewfinder. I then took the memory card home and viewed it on a 24 inch 1900 X 1200 monitor. I blew up the pictures and the results were unbelievable. Where is the proof on the X 1 Pro. The name they used for the camera is also interesting. I am a Pro and I measure Pro by what my customers say.

This camera is so drool worthy I can't stand it. I have a D3 which blew away my D2x which blew away my D1. In between I've also had the D100, D200 and D300. Do you need a Nikon Flagship body? No, do you want one YES. I am not a video shooter so I'll be able to resist this beauty for awhile but not forever...

I'd think they'd spend some R&D money on the replacement for the moderately priced D700, something that more of the general population can afford and use. Especially since we usually buy 2 bodies at a time.

the Nikon D4 A 16.2 megapixel camera. How wonderful! $6000.00 Dollars. What do you think? Do you have really deep pockets? The last Nikon I bought about a year ago for the body with a pro grip cost $1850.00 now this camera with a bunch more whistles and bells costs almost 4 times that amount. Do you own a magazine or a newspaper? Are you in fantasy land, how many pros do you know that have an extra $6000.00 lying around that are going to just run out and drop that kind of money for a camera body with no lenses?

I certainly agree with the comments about ecards. A few years ago I thought they were cute or fun, but I must admit that when I receive one now, I don't save or cherish it the way I do a printed card received in the mail. If you go to the website that Paul referenced it will take you to a generic corporate website that will require you to login to send a card. Instead, please go to mine, which is www.sendoutcards.com/jtb which will allow you to test drive the system and send a free card.

I agree with most of what you have said about Christmas cards being hastily thrown together, and especially agree with sending cards at different times of the year...why wait until Christmas? Send a card when you have an internal prompting to, or when the photos you want to use are ready. I have a couple of photographer friends who use the same program as I do with great success! This is a shameless plug, but try my website, www.CardsAndGiftsRus.com. Send a free card on me. Upload your photos if you'd like and send yourself, a friend or relative a heartfelt card! Why wait until a recognized holiday, thank someone, encourage someone today!

Great thoughts. My aunt used to send Easter cards and letters instead of during the hectic holidays.
So many people are doing meaningless ecards or cards they just sign. I'd much rather have some written words from people anytime than the quick job done at Christmas.
And I swear by www.sendoutcards.com as a way to highlight my imagery and automate the card sending process.

I have seen this image or it's like many times. The tree with it's deformed branches does not inspire me at all. For some I suppose it expresses some form of art, but other then that, what does it convey? I would like to know why this image was picked over some others. This is just my opinion.

The modeling lights on a ring flash is a brilliant idea(pun intended). I can see that this flash also has the graphic interface similar to the one on the Nissin Di866II

Any idea how V-Lux3 compares with the Fuji HS10?

Fuji HS10, which I have, but I'm always looking for a better camera.
The HS10 goes 24mm to 720mm; that 720mm is great in capturing close up architectural details (see on my web site "details").
I also have a Leica D-Lux4.

In film days, I was a wedding/portrait photographer for about 16 years. I'd like to become proficient with digital photography, but many items are too expensive. For example, adobe photoshop and lightroom. Besides doing a good job with my family, I'd actually like to shoot portraits again. Especially, I'd like to shoot high school seniors. I'm staying away from weddings unless I do an awful lot of progressing. I'm 68 and I had leukemia. I'm not a "ball of energy" anymore. But, I think I've got the "eye" and the ability to still be a pro once more. I've spent so much money on photography through the years that I'll be very cautious about future spending. Brad

Amazon prices the Fuji X10 at $699.00 (K&M) Others are $599.00

Lots of elegant cameras out there (Fuji X10, the Panasonic GX-1, Olympus EP-3). They all have peewee or out of date sensors.

The Sony Nex 5n has an APS sensor and 18-50mm zoom for $699.00 with the best tilting screen out there.
